When You Might Need a Crown

We may recommend a crown if you have:

• A tooth weakened by a large cavity or filling
• A cracked or fractured tooth
• A tooth that's had root canal therapy
• Severe wear or erosion
• A dental implant that needs a visible tooth replacement
• Cosmetic concerns with shape, size, or color

What to Expect

Getting a crown typically takes two visits. During your first appointment, we'll gently prepare the tooth, remove any decay, and shape it so the crown fits properly. We'll take impressions or digital scans to create a crown that matches your natural teeth in color and shape. You'll leave with a temporary crown to protect the tooth while your permanent crown is crafted.

At your second visit, we'll remove the temporary crown and carefully fit and cement your new permanent crown. We'll make sure your bite feels comfortable and natural before you leave.

Caring for Your Crown

With good oral hygiene and regular checkups, a crown can last 10 to 15 years or longer. Brush and floss just like you do with your natural teeth, and avoid chewing on hard objects like ice or pens. We'll monitor your crown at every visit to make sure it's holding up well.
